Lead Carpentry Instructor (Part time or Full Time)

New Orleans Technical Education Provider

New Orleans Technical Education Provider provides carpentry instruction at the high school level to develop hard-working students into college and career ready graduates. Our vision is to provide exposure to the craft industry while dually developing interested students into skilled craftsmen and future industry leaders. Students receive instruction through hands-on work in the shop, classroom components, and internships and job shadowing experiences.

Position Summary

The lead carpentry instructor position is a unique opportunity to teach NCCER Core (a basic introduction to construction) and NCCER Carpentry Level 1 (residential framing) to students in local high schools. Throughout the two courses, students are working towards professional certifications and are preparing for both college and career. Typically, instructors teach NCCER Core coupled with NCCER Carpentry Level 1 Introduction in the Fall, and teach the remainder of NCCER Carpentry Level 1 in the Spring. The lead instructor will also help design curriculum and course sequencing and assist other instructors in implementing course objectives.

Position Requirements

Education and Experience

· 3+ years of significant building experience, including some framing

· Experience working with or leading students or young adults in an urban environment

· 1+ years of experience leading volunteers or in a managerial role


· Courses run 42 weeks per year and instructors must also participate in two weeks of professional development and planning. In total, an instructor should expect to work 44 weeks per year

· A full time course load usually includes 30 hours of teaching, split between the classroom and shop, as well as approximately 10 hours per week of prep time.


· Instructors should possess a passion for helping students succeed and transition into either a career or post-secondary opportunity after graduation.

· Excellent communication, interpersonal, relationship building, and time management skills.

· Ability to use google apps including gmail, google docs, and google sheets preferred.

· Instructors must also be able to pass, within the first two years of employment, standard technical teaching examinations in order to receive certifications.

Details and Class Structure

· Each class meets 1.5 hours per day, 5 days per week.

· Once hired, if available, instructors can choose to teach anywhere from 1 to 4 courses per semester.

· Classes are offered during the day, between the hours of 7:30am and 3:30pm.

· Curriculum and course sequencing are provided to the instructor.

· Classes begin mid August and run through mid May with typical school holidays observed.

· Opportunities to teach in the Summer are also available.

· Salary ranges from $4,000 - $5,000 per course based on experience and current certifications held. Future salary increases are based on certifications earned, experience, and performance.

· The salary range for a full time instructor is between $35,000 - $45,000. Additional teaching opportunities are also usually available.
